FEATURED ARTIST - Tim Sposato                            View PDF (1MB)

Tim Sposato is an illustrator whose work reflects his love of intense color and light combined with a stylized graphic sensibility. A traditionally trained artist, Tim combines traditional techniques with today's digital technology to create eye-catching images that entice and capture the viewer's interest.

Tim tries to convey the excitement of the subject, whether it is a simple piece of fruit or a complex landscape. His goal is not necessarily to depict the subject to photographic perfection, but to create an image that enhances the viewer's response to it.

This image evolved from a packaging assignment, and was inspired by vintage fruit crate art.

He uses light, color, perspective and contrast to produce images that will have a maximum impact and leave a lasting impression in the viewer's mind. "I know I cannot improve on the natural world, so I try to use my painting to translate to the viewer the awe and excitement that fills me when I am walking in the woods feeling the breeze on my face. It is an abstract emotion that attracts us to everything

in the physical world; I try to present that emotion to the viewer. To me, even the most seemingly mundane object is worth exploring. If you really look at an orange, study the pores of its skin, you see an amazing display of light and color.

Technically, I consider myself a painter. I paint on the computer as I always have with traditional water media.

I build transparent layers of color "washes" and "glazes" digitally, as if I am working with a brush on paper of canvas."

Artistically, Tim's influences have been, and continue to be, vintage poster art; the stylized design and images of Art Deco and Art Nouveau, and Impressionistic paintings, both classic and contemporary. He also enjoys the bending and melding of images in Surrealism. "Perhaps most importantly

"Since I've been working with Tim over the past year and a half, Tim has been absolutely amazing to work with - from his illustrations to his quick response times and overall professionalism. He has the uncanny ability as an artist to ask the right questions, take the random feedback and direction, and through his graphics, synthesize it all into our overall brand essence."

the excitement and beauty of nature itself continues to inspire and fuel my art. Bright green moss, mountains, trees, water, the depth and beauty of the patterns in a fish, the contrasts of color and texture as rust eats its way through the intense red of a tractor fender, the vibrancy of light and color in all its forms.

"As a kid, I was always drawing, building, creating, or I was playing outside. I fished a lot and spent a great deal of time exploring the many ponds and creeks near my home. That love of exploring and wandering in nature stayed with me, fueled by my imagination and driven by a need to discover how I fit into it al. As I grew older, certain things remained constant in my life; a desire to create, to be in nature, to somehow find a way to add something positive to the world."

Time received a BFA with high honors from the Rochester Institute of Technology and has over 20 years of experience in both graphic design and illustration. Because of this versatility, Tim is often asked by art directors to incorporate both illustrative and design elements into a project. He enjoys integrating both skills to create a strong visual statement.

These illustration-design combination assignments have led Tim to transition into the digital realm. Though he still starts every assignments with pencil and paper, the end result is a digital file, rich with vibrant color.

"I am constantly fascinated by the world around me. So much to see, hear, touch and taste. I do not understand someone who says they are bored. There's so much around us, and inside of us, to explore! This passion is what drives me as an artist and as a person. It's as if I have no choice - to create is a response to living. I bring this enthusiasm to each and every assignment."

With this food packaging image, I tried to capture the dramatic warmth and color of the desert, visually implying the flavors of the food.

"Tim's creative & technical abilities are outstanding; he is always one step ahead of us making thoughtful & intuitive suggestions and decisions to give us the best results possible. Tim's versatility as an artist is a valuable asset and drives us back to him time after time - no matter what the challenge may be. We have been more than satisfied with the quality and professionalism Tim provides to us and to our brand."
