Illustrations:
His illustrative work evokes an old world style. “I
have been greatly inspired by Caravaggio and the paintings
of the Dutch Masters. I admire their use of warm, earthy
colors, with thecombination of dramatic lighting to highlight
the subject, set a mood, and create emotion. Before I begin
an illustration, I like to research the subject. To give me
the detail and accuracy that a “historical” illustration
requires, I often use livemodels and costumes for reference
when possible. When I began “Alexander”, for
example, it was very important to me from the very beginning
to be as true to his historical image as possible. Focusing
on the details helpsto make an illustration real and define
the subject. There is a whole process of research and preparation
that goes into my work, which is an important first step
in the creation of each new piece.”
“Pete
did a custom wall piece for us for one of our buildings
in
Germany which came out
wonderful. The vibrant colors and unique style impressed
us so much, we decided to commission him for some commercial
artwork which continues to this day”.

Background:
For almost a decade, Pete painted and restored icons (large
scale murals and panels) for various Eastern Orthodox Churches
throughout the United States. He developed a unique style of iconography that
features vibrant colors and original compositions, while still
adhering to the strict guidelines of the Byzantine style. During
this time, Pete also worked on contemporary paintings which
have been displayed in galleries from California to New York
City, with various pieces having sold to private collections,
including some to Europe.
Although Pete still works on iconography and contemporary
paintings in his spare time, he has found his true passion
in illustration.
"Pete
Paspalovski's illustrations capture a warmth and aura
of realism that articulate
mood, dignity,
and
a sense of serenity."
